Gem stone top and a traditional black handle are some of the wonderful features
of this Sgian Dubh.
I am often asked " why a knife in the sock" . This is where
Cheryl rolls her eyes and knows that I am off on another story. First for
a few of you that may be new to the Highland attire part of the Highland Life.
Sgian is a Gaelic word for knife, and Dubh is the Gaelic for the
color black. But they are not all black ? True enough. But the tradition is that
the small knife was kept in the folds of the great kilt to conceal it, usually
black in color. If you remember the part in Braveheart where the
"Insane Irishman" , his words not mine, pulls a "dagger" from nowhere.
The tradition of putting it in the sock , or kilt hose as they are called
now, was that when in a friendly place, you would pull the knife from it's
concealed place and put in your sock as a sign of friendship.
